Lil Uzi Vert is still leading the charge of the new wave of rap.
The landscape of rap has changed many times since it’s beginnings. One of America’s biggest challenge is still less then 50 years old but it has continued to shift over the years. It seems like every five or so years, the rappers at the top of the game have a different style.
The early stages of rap were some quirky puns with hardly any profanity, then NWA came and completely revolutionized things. P Diddy and Biggie took gangster rap and made it radio-friendly. Kanye sampled the world to the ground. Kendrick and J Cole destroyed pop-rap with hard and dark lyrics.
Now, the new wave of rap is more of a mixture of singing and rap. Not so much focused on lyrics, but on sound and production. Lil Yachty and others have gained huge recognition, but it’s Philadelphia’s Lil Uzi Vert who has reached new heights. Lil Uzi broke out with Money Longer and hasn’t looked back.
2016 has been the year of Uzi. After reaching the charts with his album Lil Uzi vs. The World, the 22-year old dropped what may be his best project in The Perfect Luv Tape. The mixtape brings a beautiful mix of light and heavy rap. The song “Seven Million” featuring Future gives the perfect voice contrast. Lil Uzi has a light but suitable voice for any beat. The beats on the tape are all great, but don’t overshadow Uzi’s talents.
The track “Ronda” produced by Metro Boomin’ puts Uzi’s voice on a tropical sounding beat, giving off a refreshing sound with some catchy lines. One listen to this track and it’s impossible not to continue to sing “This a gang are you in are you out/I put diamonds all up in my mouth”.
The purple-haired talent is here to stay. He’s already working within the likes of Future, Metro Boomin’, DJ Esco, London on da Track, Wiz Khalifa, and Young Thug. He’s on the way to something only few Philly rappers have accomplished, and that’s reaching complete national fame.
The new age of rap is here and Lil Uzi Vert will continue to be near the top of the stylistic change. Expect to see Uzi continue to drop a better project every time, as he’s still a growing artist. The world is in Lil Uzi’s hands and now he just has to take it.
